Creating…White Space (Part 2)

The funny thing about creating is that it rarely happens out of the blue, it
just sounds like it does (for a great book about the how and why behind
creativity check out Andrew Razeghi’s book The Riddle). The real
combination happens when you take a lot of information that you already know
and combine it with something else that you thought didn’t apply to the
problem. This, of course, is why it is important to keep knowing new
things.

We had this great idea one time to build Noah’s Ark as we told the story.
We always want to have kids participating and we wanted the ark to “float”
with kids in it. Regularly we find ourselves lying on the floor of The Big
Deal Warehouse waiting for some inspiration to fall off the shelf and hit us.

During the construction of The Big Deal we purchased a scissor lift because
it was about the same price as renting one, plus no return deadline. It
existed to solve a construction problem. We appropriated it to solve a
story problem. When “Noah” hit the up button all five kids on board were as
shocked as the audience. The blue cloth unfurled, a cardboard bird flew
from the roof and kids were safely hoisted 15 feet into the air above an
expanse of blue water.

Imagination is powerful, kids pretend, so pretend with them. Storyrealing
is taking real tools, real props, and real truth and combining them all to
tell an unforgettable story.
